The New York Power Authority (NYPA) is a public-benefit corporation that provides electricity to customers in New York. Established in 1931, NYPA is the largest state-owned electric utility in the United States and operates a vast network of power generation assets and transmission lines. NYPA’s mission is to lead the transition to a carbon-free, economically vibrant New York through customer partnerships, innovative energy solutions, and the responsible supply of affordable, clean, and reliable electricity. 

NYPA provides power generation and transmission services to more than 1,000 entities including municipalities, rural electric co-ops, public service entities, and healthcare, educational, and cultural institutions. NYPA also auctions its power on the open market to other utilities and sells the use of the NYPA transmission grid for moving power from generating facilities to power distribution centers.

AGILe

The Advanced Grid Innovation Laboratory for Energy (AGILe) is a world-class power systems lab and testing facility developed by NYPA in 2017. AGILe advances new technologies and demonstrates future-thinking electric power grid projects through real-time simulations of New York’s electric grid. AGILe’s modeling capabilities can explore a wide array of key grid functions, including automation in transmission and distribution systems, renewable energy integration, and communication networks. The outputs of these models can inform the strategy for building a more reliable and controllable power grid that can support the pursuit of New York’s ambitious climate goals.
