Turning Innovation Investment into Impact: Dynamic Line Rating at Avangrid

New York State’s clean energy transition depends not only on new generation, but also on more efficient use of the existing electric grid. With NYSERDA’s support, Avangrid and LineVision initiated a demonstration to validate a Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) system on two 230 kV transmission corridors in the Hornell area of New York State. The project focuses on addressing congestion that limits total transfer capability and restricts the ability of renewable energy resources to deliver power fully when conditions allow, exploring whether real-time monitoring and analytics can reveal additional available capacity on existing infrastructure.

 

LineVision’s DLR system continuously uses non contact scanning optical sensors with light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology to measure the position of transmission line conductors relative to fixed reference points. Because the system does not require physical contact with the line, it can be deployed without altering existing assets.

Advanced analytics are then applied to:
• Model wind speed conditions along the transmission corridors
• Calculate average conductor temperatures
• Generate dynamic line ratings that reflect real-time environmental and operating conditions rather than static seasonal assumptions

 

When dynamic ratings exceed static ratings, operators may be able to increase power flow safely for that period, improving system flexibility while maintaining safety margins.

Analysis conducted during the demonstration has produced meaningful insights:
• Total transfer capability exceeded seasonal (static) ratings in approximately 80% of hourly DLR calculations
• During adverse conditions, dynamic ratings fell below static limits, providing additional protection against overloads and potential asset damage

 

Through targeted funding, NYSERDA enabled a utility and technology provider to test an advanced grid-enhancing technology, generate real operational data, and develop insights that can inform future grid modernization decisions across New York State.
