What is Grid Resilience?
Resilience describes the grid’s ability to withstand and recover from extreme events, including weather events and disruptions caused by malicious actors. Building a resilient grid is complex, because extreme events can strike anywhere, at any time, and at any degree of severity. It requires grid operators to identify weaknesses in the system, make investments in new technologies and physical hardening, and have a plan in place for how to react when disaster strikes.
Why is it important to New York State?
Building a resilient grid is paramount to preparing for a present and future where the impacts of climate change are increasingly disruptive and dangerous. A resilient grid will help keep New Yorkers safe during harsh weather conditions. Low income and disadvantaged communities have typically been the most impacted by extreme climate conditions, so investing in a resilient grid also promotes environmental justice.
How is Grid CONNECT advancing grid resilience?
Grid CONNECT is exploring ways to quantify how different grid technologies increase the grid’s resilience. Many of the technologies Grid CONNECT is exploring through its other priority areas can be integrated into building a resilient grid.
