New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E) are subsidiaries of AVANGRID, Inc. Combined, they serve more than 1.2 million electricity customers and nearly 590,000 natural gas customers across Upstate New York. They also operate approximately 5,600 miles of transmission lines throughout the region.

With headquarters in Orange, Connecticut, AVANGRID has two primary lines of business: Avangrid Networks and Avangrid Renewables. Avangrid Networks operates NYSEG and RG&E among other utilities in the Northeastern US. Avangrid Renewables is the third largest operator of onshore renewable energy in the US, with a portfolio of solar, wind, and hydrogen generation.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

NYSEG and RG&E’s service area is diverse, including cities, suburbs, and rural towns across much of Upstate and Western New York, together serving more than 40% of Upstate New York. The customer base is a mixture of residential, commercial, and industrial.

Opportunities and Challenges

Both NYSEG and RG&E are forecasting slight increases in energy use in the near term. They are also forecasting a slight increase in peak demand without distributed energy resources (DER) as well as a slight decrease in peak demand when accounting for DER. 

RG&E and NYSEG are in the process of replacing all electric meters with smart meters and expect to complete installations in 2025. NYSEG and RG&E provide updated smart mater installation schedules on their websites.
