INTRODUCTION TO PSEG LONG ISLAND

PSEG Long Island is an electric utility that operates the electric transmission and distribution system of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), who is able to own generation assets. PSEG Long Island connects nearly 1.2 million customers to energy sources throughout Long Island and New York. 

LIPA acquired the electric transmission and distribution system of the Long Island Company in 1998As a result of LIPA Reform Act of 2013, LIPA utilizes a public-private partnership business model and contracts with PSEG Long Island to operate LIPA’s electric system under a 12-year contract. PSEG Long Island is a subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group Incorporated (PSEG).

SYSTEM OVERVIEW

Smart meter installations began in 2021 and most PSEG Long Island customers will have a smart meter installed between 2022 and 2024.

 

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

PSEG Long Island, Farmingdale State College, and Stony Brook University are working together on a smart grid project supported by a $12.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy and matching funding from the State University of New York Research Foundation and the utility. The Smart Energy Corridor Project will study how new technology can improve service, save energy, control costs, and support new jobs.
