Q1 2026 marked the completion of the first project funded by the GEMINI program, a partnership between NYSERDA and the NYPA AGILe Lab that aims to use advanced grid simulations to address the state’s most pressing energy challenges.
The project involved AGILe, GE Vernova, New York utilities, and the New York State Independent System Operator collaborating to identify and address potential grid stability risks that may emerge as more inverter-based resources (IBRs), such as offshore wind, are integrated into New York’s power system.
At the center of the project was AGILe’s digital twin of the New York bulk power system, which combined a statewide electromagnetic transient (EMT) transmission model with detailed models of offshore wind resources to simulate system behavior under high renewable penetration and stressed conditions.
Using this digital twin and a coordinated, multi-stakeholder process, the team was able to:
- Simulate system response to main contingencies of concern identified by the utilities and grid operators, including faults, generator trips, and high-wind events across critical locations in the grid
- Identify where instability could occur, including weak grid conditions and oscillatory behavior, as well as explore potential solutions to problems found.
- Evaluate system performance under future operating scenarios with increased IBR penetration
The project enabled partners to test potential mitigation strategies directly within the same modeling environment, iterating on controls and system configurations to improve stability outcomes under stressed conditions.
Through NYSERDA’s funding, the capabilities of the AGILe Lab, and the expertise of their partners, the project demonstrates the value of collaborative, system-level analysis—providing actionable insights to support reliable integration of large-scale renewable energy across New York State.
